Record Numbers for Visitors and Exhibition Space

A highly successful Chinaplas 2018 concluded its four-day show on April 27, 2018, in Shanghai, China. A total of 180,701 professional buyers from all over the world visited the 32nd edition of the show during the four days at the new show venue, the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC). Chinaplas 2018 recorded the highest visitor count in history so far, and the show also set a new record in terms of exhibition space.

The number of overseas visitors summed up 47,900, accounting for 26.5% of total. They came from 150 countries and regions, including Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the U.K., Vietnam, and United States, among others. Compared with the Shanghai edition of show two years ago (at the previous venue in Pudong), the number of visitors increased remarkably by 21.6%. The total also rose by 16.4% compared with last year's Guangzhou edition of the show.

New Record for Exhibition Space

Chinaplas 2018 was the first edition of show to be held in the NECC, and allowed the organizer to accommodate the strong booth space demand. The exhibition area covered 340,000 sq.m., an increase of 100,000 sq.m. compared to the Shanghai edition two years ago. Some 3,948 market leaders exhibited and brought cutting-edge solutions to the world stage during the show period.

"In moving to NECC, Chinaplas this year marked a new milestone in her history," said Ada Leung, General Manager of Chinaplas organizer Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd. "The achievement of the Chinaplas show is the result of hard work, perseverance, the pursuit for continuous improvement, sensitivity to market needs, creativity and seamless collaboration among internal teams and with our different cooperation partners. The last 24 months were very tough, but we have been rewarded by the positive results," she said. "Visitors are satisfied with the theme zone arrangement, as they can more easily find clusters of exhibits that address their specific interests."

At Chinaplas 2018, visitors not only met nearly 4,000 exhibitors showcasing their advanced products and services, but visitors also were able to participate in a number of exciting concurrent events. These included the "3rd Industry 4.0 Conference", "Tech Talk", "Medical Plastics Connect" and "CMF Inspiration for Design x Innovation". The concurrent events were well-received among visitors and most sessions were fully occupied.

Chinaplas' Organizer Celebrates 40th Birthday

The Adsale Group, organizer of Chinaplas, celebrated its 40th birthday during the fair. At Adsale's 40th Anniversary "Honorable Partner" Awards Presentation Ceremony held on the show's first day, The Adsale Group Chairman Stanley Chu said the company grew along with China's economy.

"Over the past 40 years, Adsale has weathered the struggles of early industries and benefited from the current economic take-off. We have witnessed China's transformation from a ‘factory of the world' to a powerhouse of innovations," observed Chu. "In the early years, Chinaplas was organized to introduce overseas technologies and provide a procurement platform for local companies. Now, it is an international hub that facilitates exchanges between suppliers and buyers from all over the world, and provides a platform for the introduction of high-end technologies."

Chinaplas 2019 will rotate to Guangzhou, running from May 21- 24, 2019.

科莱恩的中国战略明显很成功!

China sales up 13% in 2017

One Clariant Campus (OCC) in Shanghai, China (© Clariant)

After announcing this strategy in 2016, Clariant continued its commitment to innovation and sustainability in combination with improvements in governance, increased production capacity and more local cooperation.

»2017 was a successful year for Clariant in China, with 13 % sales growth and an increase in profitability. We are convinced that with our holistic growth initiative we are able to double our sales from the 2015 baseline until 2021 by continuing this successful shift towards adapting ourselves to the Chinese market and business mindset«, said Christian Kohlpaintner, Clariant’s Executive Committee Member responsible for and based in China, at Clariant’s »Defining the Future 8« Conference in Hangzhou, China.

Capacity expansions, such as the two additional Chinese production facilities for the Additives business unit announced in 2017, enable the company to meet this growing local demand and improve proximity to customers as well as raw material suppliers. This proximity is stimulated further by setting up new joint ventures, partnerships and other forms of cooperation with local Chinese companies and research institutions. Over the past year, Clariant established a joint venture with Tiangang Auxiliary to serve the growing need of process and light stabilizers made in China, signed a major cooperation agreement with China's largest petroleum and chemical company Sinopec and continued the momentum of local collaborative innovation with the Chinese academic sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOE) with Shanghai University.

中国国际橡塑展移至新址

Chinaplas' new venue: the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) in Shanghai (© Adsale)
Chinaplas 2018 will be held for the first time at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) in Hongqiao, Shanghai, PR China, next April 24-27. The exhibition area is expected to exceed 320,000 square meters - 30% more exhibition space than that of the 2016 edition of the show in Shanghai. Chinaplas 2018 will bring together 4000 exhibitors from around the world, who will be allocated over a series of special theme zones.
Since China has implemented reforms and a more open policy, its economic and technological sectors have developed and changed rapidly. The country's plastics and rubber industries, which are fundamental sectors, are growing significantly. New materials and processing technologies continue to emerge, and propel the expansion of upstream and downstream industries. Exhibitors and visitors alike have been demanding more and better exhibition services at Chinaplas, the leading plastics and rubber trade fair. This has driven Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd., the show's organizer, to continuously expand the event's scale and upgrade its quality.
"From 2012 onwards, Chinaplas has faced the problem of space shortage," according to Adsale's General Manager, Ms. Ada Leung. "By moving to the new venue, NECC, Adsale can fulfill the strong demand for exhibition space immediately. This relocation to the new venue is also good for the long-term development of Chinaplas," Ms. Leung continued.
With a total construction area of 1.47 million square meters, the NECC is the largest single block building and exhibition complex in the world. There are 400,000 square meters of indoor area, which consists of 13 large exhibition halls and three small exhibition halls. "Chinaplas 2018 will not only accommodate more exhibitors, but will also have better management in the set-up of theme zones, country/region pavilions, and concurrent events. We believe that visitors will have a new, high-quality visiting experience," Ms. Leung said.
New Theme Zones
To bring visitors a good and convenient experience, the show organizer is rearranging the overall theme zone layout. Extrusion-related technology will be in the eastern part of the NECC, injection molding technology will be in the west, and blow molding technology will occupy the southern part of the complex. Adsale is also arranging exhibits of the same category in nearby locations, for example, "film technology and plastic packaging machinery" and "injection molding technology and smart manufacturing equipment" etc. And different European pavilions, which were scattered among different halls in the past, will be gathered in Hall 2H at Chinaplas 2018.
To cater for the demands of customization and small-batch production, with the aim of shortening development cycle time and reducing costs arising from Industry 4.0, Chinaplas will set up a "3D Technology Zone" to group together the vendors and providers of 3D printing (additive manufacturing) technologies. The new theme zone and the concurrent event "The 3rd Industry 4.0 Conference" will complement each other, providing a comprehensive experience for the enterprises interested in 3D printing technology and "smart manufacturing".
In recent years, the market is accelerating for energy-saving, environmentally friendly and lightweight thermoplastic elastomers. They are widely used in the automotive, electronics and electrical, medical and footwear industries. The coming edition of Chinaplas is introducing the "Thermoplastic Elastomers & Rubber Zone" to the "Chemicals & Raw Materials Zone", and is expected to attract about 70 suppliers to showcase the latest development in this field.

克劳斯玛菲将在上海证券交易所上市

The Chinese company China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina) is seeking to list its subsidiary KraussMaffei, Munich, Germany, on a stock exchange in China. To this end, KraussMaffei is to be brought into the Qingdao Tianhua Institute of Chemistry Engineering Co. Ltd, which is listed on the Shanghai stock exchange and a subsidiary of ChemChina, by way of injecting its equity interest into an existing listed company under ChemChina.
In addition, it is planned to integrate amongst others three sites for the production of tires and rubber facilities from ChemChina into the listed entity. The transaction is subject to approvals by relevant bodies and regulators.

Dr. Frank Stieler (© KraussMaffei)
"KraussMaffei's business would make up about 85 percent of the listed company", said Dr. Frank Stieler, CEO of KraussMaffei. KraussMaffei would continue to expand the international business from Germany as well as drive the Chinese business locally. Through the planned access to the Chinese capital market, KraussMaffei will be able to accelerate its growth in the mid-term. The company headquarters of KraussMaffei remain in Munich, Germany. The German codetermination rights, the legal form of the company as well as employee and union agreements remain unchanged. The employee representatives and IG Metall therefore welcome KraussMaffei’s next step.
ChemChina remains actual controller of KraussMaffei and will continue to support the future growth of the company. “We have always believed in the growth potential of the company. Through a future listing on the Shanghai stock exchange, the perception of KraussMaffei will significantly increase in the Chinese market. Chinese investors appreciate German industrial workmanship as well as management competency,” said Jianxin Ren, Chairman of ChemChina.

恩格尔在上海庆祝十年

For Engel Machinery (Shanghai), 2017 is a special year: Ten years ago, the plant opened and the first large-size machine produced in Shanghai was delivered. Just in time for this anniversary, the company has completed the second largest expansion in the history of the plant. Engel celebrated both milestones in Shanghai, together with more than 500 guests including customers and partners, in mid-September.
Gero Willmeroth, Sales and Service President at Engel Machinery (Shanghai), welcomed the guests from all regions of China, other Asian countries and beyond. He was particularly pleased that 24 of the initial employees were able to attend the anniversary celebrations. “For China, such a long period of employment with one company is still something special.” With 50 employees, Engel Machinery (Shanghai) began building the large-size machines for the duo series in 2007. Today the subsidiary of Engel Austria employs a workforce of around 450 – and rising. “By the end of the current fiscal year in March 2018, we will employ 500 people here,” says Willmeroth.
Consistent Development
Engel Machinery (Shanghai) was established as the second of three production plants in Asia. As injection molding machines with low and medium clamping forces have been built in Korea since 2001, Shanghai was always planned as a purely large-size machine plant. Especially in Eastern and Northern China, there are many automotive suppliers with a high demand for large-size machines. In addition, there are more qualified skilled workers in Shanghai than in most other regions of the country, and the large international airport is also located here.
Apart from automotive components, front frames and housing parts for TVs, drums for washing machines, boxes and pallets as well as large technical components such as fan propellers are produced in Asia on duo injection molding machines. “Although our original customer base mainly consisted of large international corporations and Western-orientated companies, more and more Asian plastics processors are now among our customers,” said Dr Stefan Engleder, CEO of the Group, during the celebrations. “Asia – with China at the forefront – has developed from the extended workbench of the world to an extremely quality-orientated market with a huge domestic demand.
As sister factory to the Engel large-size machine plant in St. Valentin, Austria, Engel Machinery (Shanghai) is subject to the strict Austrian quality management system. The work processes are identical in both plants. In order to be able to guarantee its customers in Asia this high quality over the long term, the company started to train its next generations of skilled personnel in Shanghai four years ago. Forty-five young people are currently being trained in three technical vocations according to the Austrian model of dual professional training.
Continuous Investment as One Factor for Success
After a first major expansion in 2012 which doubled production capacity Engel has now completed the second extensive plant expansion just in time for its 10th anniversary. The company invested EUR 7.5 million in the latest expansion. Two new building complexes were added. The existing office building was lengthened to create an additional 1000 m² of office space. A new production hall was also built, expanding large-size machine production by 1600 m². In addition, new offices and the training workshop are located in the new hall. It is significantly larger and more modern than the old one.
Of its global turnover of EUR 1.36 billion in the 2016/2017 fiscal year, Engel generated 20 % in Asia. 90 % of this stemmed from local production in China and Korea. “Asia remains one of the regions with the strongest growth,” says Dr Christoph Steger, CSO of the Engel Group. This is due mainly to the very dynamic markets in Southeast Asia and China's strong demand for integrated and automated manufacturing solutions.

The Austrian company Next Generation Recyclingmaschinen GmbH (NGR) develops and manufactures plastics recycling equipment for industrial and consumer waste. As part of the reopening of the three year-old Customer Care Center in Taicang, NGR is expanding its sales activities in China and Southeast Asia.

With its move into the German Center Taicang, which will provide better infrastructure for customers and employees, the Chinese NGR subsidiary is laying new groundwork for China and the entire Southeast Asia region. The sales office will be led by the new sales director Jeffrey Tan, a native of Singapore.

With Sven Heine, CEO of Anhui Green Recycling and Environmental Protection Research Center Co., Ltd., NGR has added an authorized partner for customer trials and technical support in Hefei. As a recycler of industrial plastic waste, Heine counts on NGR technology and also provides prospects the chance to carry out test series for customized recycling solutions with his company's S:Gran 85-70 V HD system.

Concrete objectives on the part of the Chinese government to promote renewable energies and better use of resources are increasingly focusing on environmental protection. The company's own license for recycling plastic waste meets these very high environmental standards. The growing demand for plastics makes the Chinese and Southeast Asian plastics industry an important driver for the global market. "Expanding our sales organization is therefore a logical next step in our operations, and with the new team, we will be even better equipped to deal with these important markets," says NGR's CEO Josef Hochreiter, looking ahead optimistically.

科莱恩在中国达到ISO 15378

The Healthcare Packaging manufacturing facility in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, China, from Clariant, Muttenz, Switzerland, recently obtained ISO 15378:2011 certification for the production of desiccant packets for healthcare applications.

ISO 15378:2011 specifies requirements for current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and a quality management system (QMS) for manufacturers of primary packaging materials for pharmaceuticals. Organizations certified under the standard must demonstrate their ability to consistently meet customer requirements, including compliance with the specific regulations and standards that apply to packaging materials used in pharmaceutical applications. The ISO documents state: “the realization of GMP principles in production and control of primary packaging materials within organizations is of great importance for the safety of a patient using the medicinal product because of their direct product contact.”

Clariant produces its desiccant packet brands Sorb-it (silica gel) and Tri-Sorb (molecular sieve) at numerous facilities globally, including in Dongguan, providing customers a wide array of options and Business Continuity Planning (BCP). The Dongguan site produces a full portfolio of desiccant packets both for regional Asia-Pacific healthcare markets and for export to the Americas and Europe.

Dongguan follows Clariant’s other sites that already maintain ISO 15378:2011 certification: Romorantin, France; Belen, NM/USA; and Changshu, China. The network of production sites will soon include a fifth facility in Cuddalore, India, where Clariant is constructing a new plant.

中国国际橡塑展2017专注于智能制造

Industry 4.0 will impact nearly every major manufacturing operation around the globe. Germany and China launched their respective "Industry 4.0" and "Made in China 2025" strategies with the similar purpose of upgrading their industries and advancing the goal of smart manufacturing. Building on the success of the first edition of "Industry 4.0 Conference" last year in Shanghai, Chinaplas will once again join with VDMA, the German Engineering Federation, to present the "2nd Industry 4.0 Conference" at this year's show in Guangzhou (May 16-19, 2017).

Speakers from leading global plastics and rubber enterprises and application industries, including from the automotive, electrical & electronics and packaging industries, will share their in-depth insights about smart manufacturing. Overseas and domestic enterprises alike, including those based in Pearl River Delta Region, stand to benefit from this event. Guangdong Province in Southern China, one of the country's pivotal bases for plastics and rubber product manufacture, is in need of industrial transformation and upgrading through smart manufacturing. The manufacturing industries of Guangdong Province face numerous challenges, including rising production costs, and tend to focus on making basic, low-value-added products while not delivering the more sophisticated, higher-end products needed to meet customers' demands today.

The "Made in China 2025" strategy initiated by the Chinese government aims to comprehensively upgrade China's manufacturing industry. It embraces the concept of Industry 4.0 and opens itself to advanced ideas from countries such as the United States, Great Britain and Germany. Both the "Industry 4.0" and "Made in China" strategies emphasize smart manufacturing and cyber-physical systems in industrial development, while the latter focuses on addressing the specific challenges faced by the Chinese market. To help conference participants better understand how to realize smart manufacturing in China under the New Normal economic situation, academic researchers from Tongji University will be invited to interpret the standards related to the "Made in China 2025" strategy.

A "Smart Manufacturing Technology Zone" will be set up in Chinaplas 2017 (© Adsale Exhibition Services)

Smart Manufacturing Technology Zone

Besides the conference, Chinaplas 2017 also will present a "Smart Manufacturing Technology Zone" on the show floor to showcase solutions for industrial automation. Apart from the robotics, factory automation systems and components that were featured in the last edition of Chinaplas, visitors will have a chance to witness a smart production line and smart factory solutions from leading suppliers, including Bosch Rexroth, Siemens and Demark. There also will be a sub-zone called the "3D Technology Zone" set up in the "Smart Manufacturing Technology Zone". The sub-zone will bring together well-known companies in the field of 3D printing technology, including 3D software system supplier Autodesk from the USA, 3D printer and application solution suppliers Cangming and Ureal, and 3D printing consumables supplier Renolit.

玉集团在中国扩张

Jade manufactures a range of plastic parts for various industries including consumer goods, industrial, packaging, and automotive (© Jade)

Jade Group International, a global provider of high-quality tooling and manufacturer of plastic parts and components, has announced an expansion of its China operations in response to growing demand for its products in North America, Canada, and Europe.

Jade has grown significantly since its founding and outgrew its current manufacturing facility in Zhongshan. That is why, in December, the company moved its tooling operation into a new 1600-sq-meter leased location in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province. The first factory, which combined both mold building and plastics processing, will now only manufacture plastic parts.

Jade opened its tooling operation in China in 2006 and later added manufacturing, assembly, and packaging in 2013. The company combines the advantages and convenience of U.S. engineering/production standards and communications with the cost competitiveness, skilled labor supply, and high production capacity of off-shore operations. Jade has salespeople located throughout the U.S. and engineering and project management staff who work remotely in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and other locations. “Offshore molds offer lower cost and therefore the ability for our clients to bring more new products to market within the same budget,” said Patrick Smith, president of Jade Group International. “Producing more new products equates to a greater chance of success for our clients.”

battenfeld-cincinnati在中国庆祝20年

battenfeld-cincinnati Celebrates 20 Years in China

The concept of producing locally in China for the Chinese market has worked out perfectly for battenfeld-cincinnati. battenfeld-cincinnati (Foshan) Extrusion Systems Ltd. (battenfeld-cincinnati China) in Foshan/Shunde is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. With high-quality extrusion equipment for the production of pipe and profile and local service, the company has steadily won over more and more processors in the past twenty years.

“On the one hand, our engineers here in China benefit from strong group backing and on the other hand from the concentrated extrusion competence of our facilities in Europe as well as in the USA. Thanks to this, they can design customized equipment for local needs”, Toni Bernards, CEO of battenfeld-cincinnati China, explains the company’s success. Since its foundation in 1996, the company has developed very positively – last year alone, sales increased by 20 %. Today, battenfeld-cincinnati China has 130 employees and contributes about 25% to the group’s sales.

battenfeld-cincinnati celebrates the 20th company anniversary in China and the 20th participation at Chinaplas (© battenfeld-cincinnati)

In the beginning, the machine manufacturer focused only on the Chinese market, but that has long since changed. Now, annual export rates of 45% are achieved, with the main export markets being Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. In China, battenfeld-cincinnati China serves a very broad customer base. About 90 % of customers are small, local processors that gain a competitive advantage from the advanced extrusion technology. 10 % of customers are companies operating on a global scale that are often already familiar with the battenfeld-cincinnati brand and want to use the tried and tested technology at their facilities in Asia.

In the past years, the market for extruded products has developed significantly, both in terms of volume and of quality. “While our equipment was in demand in only a small, high-quality segment twenty years ago, this has completely changed. With the growing demand for high-quality pipes and profiles, the demand for suitable equipment technology has also increased,” mentions Gerold Schley, CEO of the battenfeld-cincinnati group, as a reason for the company’s continued growth. Along with the market, the machine portfolio of battenfeld-cincinnati China has changed over the years. Today, besides the well-established, efficient extruders of the solEX and twinEX series, the company offers the newest, innovative components in China. This includes the Fast Dimension Change (FDC) system for pipe production, which allows pipe diameter changes during production and is therefore a very efficient and material-saving solution, just as the Multi-Touch roll stack for manufacturing thermoforming sheet.

Like its Austrian-German parent company, battenfeld-cincinnati China’s product portfolio includes pipe extrusion lines for PO, PVC and PE-RT pipes, profile extrusion lines for window main profiles or small technical profiles and pelletizing lines, as well as extrusion lines for thermoforming sheet production. The latter are offered as hybrid lines, for which some components are supplied from Europe.

中国市场合成乳胶聚合物越来越紧

Accounting for almost 25% of the global market share, China is the second largest consumer of synthetic latex polymers after North America, according to the just-published China chapter report from Kline’s continuous program Synthetic Latex Polymers: Global Business Analysis and Opportunities. A considerably higher GDP growth compared to the developed world, low industry regulations, and stability in raw material prices appeals to multinational corporations and domestic suppliers, increasing market rivalry dramatically.

“While in most regional markets paints and coatings is the largest consumer of synthetic latex polymers, adhesives and sealants is the largest end use application in China,” notes Shilpi Mehrotra, the project’s lead. “This stems from China being the largest producer globally of biaxially-oriented polypropylene tapes for packaging that use large volumes of latex polymers in pressure-sensitive adhesives.” The rising construction segment further drives the demand for adhesives and sealants and paints and coating in terms of both volume and value. In product terms, X-SB dominates the Chinese market by volume, as this polymer is widely used in the well-developed paper industry, while pure acrylics is the largest product in value terms. However, the market is still price sensitive, limiting the use of high-value products.

Growth in services and various industry sectors in China generate favorable market conditions for suppliers. The competitive landscape in the Chinese market for synthetic latex polymers is fragmented, with the top 10 suppliers accounting for around 38% of the total market share. Supplier base comprises three tiers of companies, including global multinational corporations, such as BASF, Dow Chemical, and Wacker, domestic companies with a national focus, such as Shunde BATF, Shanxi Sanwei, Shanghai Baolijia, and Beijing Organic Chemical, and domestic companies with the a regional focus, including Hengshui Xinguang, Dongguan Hontex, and Jiangsu Runyang. BASF is the leading supplier of synthetic latex polymers in China in terms of value, mainly due to its strong presence in the X-SB and styrene acrylics markets. Local supplier Sunde BATF is the second largest market player, specializing in the production of styrene acrylics and pure acrylics.

According to a five-year forecast, China’s strong GDP growth, supported by the rise in services and industry sectors will be the major market driver for each individual product. Glove dipping is expected to be the fastest growing end-use application due to the growing demand for synthetic latex gloves globally. As a result, the major chemical used in this application, AB-Nitrile, will be the fastest growing product in the region. On the other hand, the textiles industry will experience the slowest growth due to its mature market stage. The use of VA VEVA will continue to decrease. VAE is the strongest competitor to VA VEVA as it is comparatively lower-priced and provides better performance, as well as being friendly to the environment.

恩格尔回首30年在亚洲

Engel Looks back on 30 Years in Asia

Together with its customers and partners, Engel Austria GmbH, Schwertberg, Austria, will be celebrating 30 years in Asia during Chinaplas 2016. Until today Engel remains the only company producing machines in multiple factories in the region.

As the first European injection molding machine manufacturer, Engel founded its own subsidiary in Hong Kong in 1986, and after that development advanced at a rapid pace. In order to meet the growing demand, additional sales offices, service centres and ultimately further subsidiaries were established in Singapore, Korea, Shanghai, India and Thailand, as well as numerous representatives. Until today, Engel continues to expand its presence and production capacities in Asia. In 2001, the production plant for injection molding machines with low and medium clamping forces was opened in Pyungtaek-City, South Korea. Since 2007, large-size machines are being produced in Shanghai. Both plants produce for the local markets.

"With its very large markets and often very dynamic development, Asia is a major pillar in Engel's worldwide success, thus also contributing to the growth of our Austrian locations," emphasizes Dr. Christoph Steger, Chief Sales Officer at Engel. "Our early efforts in Asia secured access to the major electronics companies that have grown internationally from their base in Asia. Back then and still today, these companies place great value in having partners and suppliers that are located close to their headquarters and production facilities."

Local production guarantees short delivery times for Engel's customers and ensures that the injection molding machines, robots and system solutions can be flexibly adapted to the specific requirements of the Asian markets. The company achieves 85 % of its turnover in Asia with its local production. The field of teletronics is still one of the strongest sources of revenue. In the meantime, an even greater share of the revenue stems from the automotive industry and its suppliers. Further important target areas are the packaging and medical industries, which are both profiting from the strong population growth and increasing prosperity.

In order to also secure the qualified professionals it needs in Asia, Engel invested in its own apprentice workshop at the Shanghai large-size machine manufacturing plant (© Engel)

Engel started in Asia with four staff members, today there are more than 500 in China alone, and Korea has more than 180. There are only few Europeans among them. With altogether three production plants, the Engel Group in Asia also has a great need for qualified professionals. In order to secure them for the long term, Engel Machinery Shanghai started its own training programme two years ago. An apprentice workshop of its own has been built at the large-size machine manufacturing plant in China that is modeled after the award-winning apprentice workshop at the company headquarters in Schwertberg, Austria. In contrast to most other trainees in China, the apprentices there gain a thorough practical foundation on the job from the first year on.

巴登菲尔德-辛辛那提成功在中国建厂

210 customers attended the two successful Open House days at battenfeld-cincinnati’s plant in Shunde (figure: battenfeld-cincinnati)

On 21 and 22 May, battenfeld-cincinnati welcomed 210 visitors at its Shunde plant for presentations and extrusion line demonstrations. Toni Bernards, CEO of battenfeld-cincinnati China comments on the Chinaplas and the Open House event, “We had a great show and the Open House, too, was a success. We see that the Chinese market needs both – top performance solutions for high-end applications and turnkey lines for standard products that are simple, easy to handle and quickly available."

At the Open House, the 400 mm line for gas pipe extrusion delivered high outputs and top performance. The solEX 75 single screw extruder presented has, as standard, an AC motor that saves 20% energy compared with a DC motor and achieved outputs of 1,200 kg/h with a low noise level of below 80 db. The proven helix 400 VSI-T pipe head with inner pipe cooling EAC (efficient air cooling) ensured excellent melt homogeneity and pipe quality, with minimized sagging. This is why the combination of solEX and helix VSI-T is also ideal for large diameter solid wall PO pipe extrusion – diameters up to 2.6 m are currently possible. The 400 mm PE-RT line was sold to Hebei BlucicinPlastic Industry Co. Ltd., located at Guan, Hebei Province, before the Open House. The Chinese company produces PVC pipe, PPR pipe, PE pipe, PB/PBOB pipe and also bought the first 32 mm PBOB pipe line produced at battenfeld-cincinnati China in 2013.

The second line on display was a LeanEX line, which is available in five sizes: 63, 160, 250, 400 and 630 mm. The LeanEX concept stands for “lean extrusion”, i.e. simple, turnkey lines for standard PO pipe applications built with European technology and locally sourced screws, barrels, motors and drives.

中国国际橡塑展上的德中成功合作

The German association Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau e.V., Frankfurt, organized a press event with a panel discussion about the downward trend in energy consumption at 20th May 2015 at Chinaplas in Guangzhou . The International Exhibition on Plastics and Rubber Industries takes place at China Import & Export Fair Complex, Pazhou, Guangzhou, PR China, from 20 to 23 May 2015.

On the occasion of the press event the VDMA and fair organizer Adsale highlighted their close cooperation over the last 30 years, based on common objectives in technological development and sustainability. As organizer of the fair, Stanley Chu, Chairman of Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd, acknowledged with thanks the VDMA’s solid support, on which he has been able to rely since the first Chinaplas was held in Beijing back in 1983.

Over the past decades, the fair has grown to become Asia’s biggest marketplace for the plastics and rubber industry, and with more than 3,000 exhibitors from 40 countries it comes second only to the world’s leading trade fair K in Düsseldorf. At Chinaplas 2015 the official German pavilion alone includes more than 140 firms.

Energie Consumption and Energy Efficiency

The VDMA has already launched the so called Blue Competence sustainability initiative three years ago. More than 400 firms have joined the network since it started. 54 of them are members of the Plastics and Rubber Machinery Association. Goals of the initiative are environmental protection, conservation of resources and management efficiency. These would be achieved by means both greater efficiency in the use of energy and resources, better training and good corporate management.

With Blue Competence, German plastics and rubber machinery manufacturers demonstrate that they want to be important partners for Chinese industry when it comes to supplying sophisticated and efficient technology. In the course of the panel discussion on Energy Efficiency for example Dr. Karlheinz Bourdon, Vice President Technologies of KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH from Munic, Germany, and Helmut Heinson, CEO of Arburg GmbH + Co KG from Loßburg, Germany, gave examples of the extent to which efficient technology can pay dividends.

Joanne Shen, Managing Director of Coperion (Nanjing) Machinery Co. Ltd., reports the change of the Chinese market for plastics and rubber machinery . Energy efficiency has always been an important criterion at the high price segment, but the Chinese customers want to secure competitive advantages for themselves with energy-efficient manufacturing in the mid and low price segments as well.

In the meantime applicable standards for measuring specific energy consumption are developed by VDMA. A broad alliance of many injection molding machine manufacturers has succeeded in developing the Euromap energy measurement standards 60.1 and 60.2 for this category of machines. Euromap 60.1 provides an overview of machinery-related energy consumption and 60.2 enables complex, customer-specific injection molding applications to be compared in relation to the product. There are also energy measurement standards for extrusion blow molding machines, and others, for thermoforming for example, are under development.

On 18 May 2015, Zhafir Plastics Machinery GmbH, Ebermannsdorf, Germany, a subsidiary of the Haitian International Holdings Ltd., opened the first section of its new Chinese plant in Chunxiao, a suburb of Ningbo. The Grand Opening was attended by more than 650 guests from China and overseas.

After a construction period of 15 months, the finished complex offers a production area of around 120,000 m2 . Here, about 400 employees and will in the future manufacture as many as 5,000 Zhafir electrical injection molding machines per year. Mr. Qin Mingbo, Deputy General Manager and in charge of sales at Zhafir Plastics Machinery, comments: ”With this new setup we see a great future for electric machines.” Total area for the plant’s buildings is planned for approx. 300,000 m2 , with a maximum production capacity amounting to 10,000 machines annually.

Final assembly and testing field of the new plant (figure: Zhafir)

The plant includes departments for R&D (about 50 engineers), a technology and application center, machine testing, metal processing, and sheet-metal processing, and for a paint shop and machine assembly. Mr. Fu Nanhong, General Manager of Zhafir Plastics Machinery and responsible for the R&D mentioned: ”The production will focus first on the successful Venus Series and the new Zeres Series. Other models will gradually be added to the portfolio.”

With the new Chunxiao plant, the management of Zhafir Plastics Machinery sees the realization of a highly cost-efficient manufacturing concept that makes it possible to reduce production times drastically while continuing to guarantee high-quality production. Thus, for example, a decentralized paint shop is installed upstream of production/final assembly in order to handle castings, sheet-metal parts, and machine beds on demand, i.e. not until they are needed. Several decentralized warehouses located directly adjacent to the individual sub-assembly modules will reduce internal transportation routes and supply times, enabling a more transparent management of inventory.

For the European market, Zhafir machines are assembled and customized in Ebermannsdorf, Germany. Further expansions of capacity in Germany are also planned. Furthermore, Zhafir Plastics Machinery’s German R&D team works on new innovative electrical machine concepts in close cooperation with their colleagues in Chunxiao.

LPKF 继续在中国发展镭射直接雕刻业务

With LPKF's Laser Direct Structuring systems, circuit pathways can be imprinted directly onto three-dimensional plastic components (figure: LPKF)

LPKF Laser & Electronics AG, Garbsen, Germany, has received an order worth 2.5 million from a Chinese electronic manufacturer for Laser Direct Structuring (LDS) systems. This is the first phase of a large-scale order LPKF was expecting in the fourth quarter of 2014, but which the client postponed.

With LPKF's Laser Direct Structuring systems, circuit pathways can be imprinted directly onto three-dimensional plastic components. This saves on space and weight, making it particularly suited to the manufacture of components for small mobile end devices such as smartphones.

In the LDS patent dispute in China, the Supreme People's Court has released its decision to reject LPKF's appeal to review the case. This means that the LDS patent in China remains invalid. However, outside China, it continues to be valid in all significant markets. "We will continue to build on our LDS business in China, even without the patent. The higher quality and greater cost efficiency of our systems in the production process are the decisive factors here," says Ingo Bretthauer, CEO at LPKF.

Hekuma 扩大在中国的活动

Due to an increased demand for automation technology in the Chinese market Hekuma GmbH, Eching, Germany, is going to further expand its presence in the region.

Hekuma has been present in the Chinese market for more than three years. The local sales office of the Bavarian manufacturer of high-performance automation systems is located in the Shanghai premises of its holding company, elexis Group. In the past decade, gross monthly wages in China increased at an average annual rate of about ten percent - and so did the growth prospects for automation system manufacturers. A growing number of European customers of Hekuma are relocating their production to China. Not only European and US customers, but also local companies in the automotive, medical device and consumer goods industries are increasingly investing in automation systems.

Hekuma managing director Bernhard Rupke comments: “The best way to meet the growing demand for our system solutions is an increased service presence and an enhanced German-Chinese dialogue within our company. To continue to work in close coordination with our partners, the development of a powerful sales and service center is a consistent and forward-looking step for the company”.

The Chinese sales organization around sales manager Jack Zuo will be strengthened by another local sales representative. In addition, Hekuma has also increased its capacity at its German headquarters in order to provide Chinese customers with technical consulting in their native language. Hekuma now has three employees with German-Chinese language skills. As of 2016, bilingual service engineer Marcel Rick will be based in Shanghai to provide service in China and the South-East Asian markets. Customers will be offered a comprehensive range of services in the areas of production and start-up support, operator and maintenance training (in Chinese) as well as machine and process optimization. For this purpose, Hekuma will, among other things, set up a local technical hotline. Beginning in 2015, experienced Hekuma employees will be providing service support of Hekuma systems out of Shanghai.

上海会议讨论PET循环回收

The 10th anniversary of the China International Recycled Polyester Conference held in Shanghai, China in September brought the good news that PET recyling is a vital growing industry segment in China and worldwide, also expressed by the large number of conference and exhibition visitors which counted nearly 350.

As a general trend in all areas of PET recycling and processing one can observe three main features like

  • automatization with main targets to improve product quality and profitability,
  • concentration and capacity growth,
  • direct conversion from PET-flakes to nearly all kind of polyester intermediates.

Li Lingshen, Chairman China Nonwoven and Industrial Textiles Association provided a detailed overview about market and development of technical textiles in China underlining the disproportionate growth within all key fields like nonwovens, hygienic textiles, filtering and separating textiles, reinforced textiles, geotextiles, transportation and protective textiles. His overall forecast for 2014 predicts a double digit growth for technical textiles in China.

Qian Jun, Vice President Ningbo Dafa Chemical Fiber Co. Ltd. introduced a detailed appraisal system to achieve a cleaner production with main focus to reduce energy consumption and environmental pollution. Ralf Altepeter, sales representative of Gneuss GmbH provided an update about vacuum degassing technique applying the new Multi Rotation System. Helen Fu, Manager of IKEA China introduced the activities of her company in using increased amounts R-PET fiber in their products. She mentioned a total consumption of about 50,000 t/a R-PET fiber. David Hehenberger explained NGRs development of a melt polycondensation for recycling purposes based on lab testing and pilot trials. The new facility which is lifting up polyester IV by 0,01–0,02 dl/g per hour is planned to be introduced to industry in 2015.

Ulrich Thiele, President of Dr. Thiele Polyester Technology presented a paper about the chemical conversion of PET bottle flakes to amorphous PETG or PBT by diol exchange reaction. Stewart Hardy from Nexant Ltd. provided a dense comparison of the global R-PET market with the development in China. The most important message was Chinas strong dependence from bottle flake imports round the globe.

Arburg 扩大中国技师培训服务

Arburg GmbH+Co. KG, Lossburg, Germany, is taking another step in customer support by extending its high standard of service worldwide. In future, international service technicians can benefit from the same high standard of training whether they attend a training course at the company headquarters in Lossburg or receive decentralised training in their own local language.

Arburg Managing Partner Renate Keinath (left) and Uwe Klumpp (right), Product Training Manager in Lossburg, present Jason Ding from Arburg Shanghai with his certificate marking successful completion of the training course for trainers (Arburg)

The program has started with Jason Ding, most recently Head of Service at Arburg’s subsidiary in Shanghai. He received basic training at headquarters from September to November 2014 and will be the first trainer at a subsidiary to train service technicians at local level. In future, this model will become a regular feature at Arburg, enabling native speakers to cover training course content with staff and customers in a professional way without language barriers.

“You are the first employee from a subsidiary to be trained as a trainer,” said Arburg Managing Partner Renate Keinath when she presented Jason Ding with his new trainer certificate on 18 November 2014. “We are very pleased that you will be able to share the experience and expertise you have gained here in Lossburg with our service technicians in China in future.” Jason Ding has already been working for Arburg in China for 18 years, mainly in the service area. In organisational terms, he is now part of the Product Training department and thus has access to the relevant documents at headquarters, enabling him to provide expert training for the technical team in China and, later, in other Asian countries.

Jason Ding believes it makes very good sense to train Chinese service technicians in their native language: “In China, it’s still difficult to find suitable employees with good English skills. That’s why training in the local language is better suited for communicating all the content in detail.” Now that he has received basic training as a trainer, Jason Ding will pay regular visits to the company’s German headquarters to see the latest interesting developments at first hand, so that he can incorporate these into his training courses in China.

巴斯夫股份公司和中国石化在中国建立新厂

BASF and Sinopec inaugurated two new plants for acrylic acid and superabsorbent polymers (SAP) at their state-of-the-art Verbund site, BASF-YPC Co., Ltd., a 50-50 joint venture in Nanjing, China.

The new plants will further strengthen the C3 (propylene) value chain and serve the growing downstream demand. With an annual capacity of 60,000 metric tons, the new SAP plant will serve growing demand in China for baby diapers, adult incontinence products and feminine care products. Additionally, a new butyl acrylate plant will begin production later this year.

“BASF is investing in Asia Pacific to produce 75% of our Asia Pacific sales locally, in order to ensure faster, more energy-efficient, more reliable supply. With the start-up of these projects, we continue to build on the success of our strong partnership with Sinopec, and reinforce our commitment to serving the hygiene industry in China and Asia as well as around the world,” said Albert Heuser, President, Greater China and Functions Asia Pacific, BASF.

BASF’s “Verbund” system creates efficient value chains that extend from basic chemicals right through to high-value-added products. In addition, the by-products of one plant can be used as the starting materials of another. At the BASF-YPC Verbund site in Nanjing, SAP, butyl acrylate and acrylic acid production will be backward integrated into the manufacturing of C3. This ensures greater supply reliability, energy efficiency, and cost effectiveness, while minimizing energy use and environmental impact.

BASF-YPC Co., Ltd., the 50-50 joint venture between BASF and Sinopec, was founded in 2000, with a total investment of USD 4.5 billion. The integrated petrochemical site produces 3 million tons of high-quality chemicals and polymers for the Chinese market annually. The products serve the rapid-growing demand in multiple industries including agriculture, construction, electronics, pharmaceutical, automotive and chemical manufacturing.

Engel 上海基地迎来第一批学徒

First Apprentices Start Training at Engel in Shanghai

Engel Austria, Schwertberg, has exported the Austrian model of dual vocational training to China and started the training of apprentices at its large-scale machine facility in Shanghai, China.

Over the next four years, Engel Machinery Shanghai will train ten young men as CNC technicians. “We are expanding rapidly in China, where we always have a high demand for skilled workers,” points out Dr. Peter Neumann, CEO of Engel Holding. “Finding qualified staff in China can be difficult, though, because in many areas their state education does not measure up to our high requirements. That's why we took the decision to set up our own training programme in China as well.”

Engel's new training workshop in Shanghai is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and machinery. Trainer Li Taoxian (left) explains Yuan Chenkai how to mark tools with a marking gauge (figure: Engel)

In contrast to most other apprentices in China, Engel trainees gain a thorough practical grounding on the job from the first year onwards, and receive payment. Engel designed the new training workshop along the lines of its workshop at the company headquarters in Schwertberg, Austria, which has attracted national awards; the new facility is similarly equipped with state-of-the-art machinery. The trainers themselves were trained in Austria. Trainees are now undergoing 12 weeks of practical training and six weeks of classroom instruction alternately. At the end they receive a qualification equivalent to the Austrian standard that is recognized in both China and Europe.

In setting up a dual vocational training programme, Engel is emerging as a pioneer in China. The producer of injection molding machines has put in place the infrastructure necessary for this together with partner firm Alpla Werke A. Lehner GmbH & Co. KG of Hard in Austria. With the support of the Austrian Institute for Economic Promotion (WIFI International) and the foreign trade organisation of the Economic Chamber, the two companies viewed various training facilities around Shanghai before finding the ideal partner in the Shanghai Information Technology College (SITC). The SITC is already running a special class devoted to the theoretical training of prospective CNC technicians. Apprentices completed general preparatory subjects at college before beginning their practical training with Engel and Alpla.

Invista 在中国建立新厂

Invista broke ground on new hexamethylene diamine (HMD) and nylon 6,6 polymer plants at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP) in China. These facilities mark a key milestone in Invista’s plans for integrated nylon 6,6 facilities in the China market and underscore the company’s commitment to the region.

The 215,000-ton HMD plant and the 150,000-ton polymer plant are expected to start up in 2015. INVISTA has already received several government permits; most recently, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau granted Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval for the polymer facility.

More than 300 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including senior government officials from SCIP, the Jinshan government and related authorities, local customers, Invista leadership and employees. “China is one of the most important regions for our growth strategy,” said Jeff Gentry, Invista’s chairman and chief executive officer. “We have seen significant growth in the region in recent years, and we plan to continue to bring our latest innovative technologies here. The theme of our groundbreaking event – Growing Together: a New Era of Nylon 6,6 – reflects the fact that we are working closely with our customers to build the local nylon and polyurethane markets.”

In addition to the HMD and polymer plants, Invista has plans for a future, 300,000-ton adiponitrile (ADN) facility. Once completed, the new facilities will be among the most energy-efficient nylon intermediates sites in the world and will employ Invista’s most advanced technologies for ADN, HMD and polymer production. The overall investment in these plants will exceed USD 1 billion, which will be the largest capital investment undertaken by the company to date.
